Utah Lawmakers Choose Hollywood Tax Breaks Over Education Scholarships For Poor Families

Some of our loyal readers complain that we at the Hotline are too pro-Republican (the truth is we regard the GOP as the lesser of two evils). But in the name of bipartisanship, let us rag on the Republicans in Utah for a moment.

First, the Republican Governor Spencer Cox vetoed a school choice bill last week. Then a few days later the Republicans in the legislature voted down $32 million for “Hope Scholarships” for kids who want alternative education options. These same lawmakers turned around and approved $24 million in tax breaks for Hollywood producers who make movies in Utah.

The tweet below from Utah Parents United tells much of this sordid story.
