When’s the last time you saw a really good movie? Really? The number one movie this week is yet another Star Wars remake, which was originally released by George Lucas about 50 years ago.
Meanwhile, as we reported earlier this week, Hollywood’s production freefall could be a factor in the upcoming Los Angeles mayoral primary. Here’s how bad the situation has become:
The number of on-location shoot days in LA has fallen from 37,000 in 2022 to under 20,000 in 2025, a drop of over 40% and about the same level as 2020, when there was a literal lockdown order in effect. Employment in the industry is also down by more than 25%
The Hollywood Reporter finds that none of the 10 movies up for the Best Picture Oscar were produced in a Hollywood studio.
Why? Here’s one sad assessment in the Hollywood Reporter that rings true to us:
The Hollywood I experienced when I first arrived on the West Coast no longer exists. From the streaming wars and the rise of YouTube to a global pandemic, labor unrest and disruption generated by AI and M&A — not to mention the political climate and even destructive wildfires — the industry’s view of this “Roaring ’20s” is far different from the last one a century ago. But I believe we are still a long way off from pulling the plug. My optimism stems from this being an inspiring business and an essential part of our culture, something definitely worth saving.
We hope to see a movie-making comeback or Hollywood is going to be gone with the wind.
