Here’s another reason to hate gerrymandering and to love congressional term limits. The number of competitive House seats this year out of 435 is expected to be far less than 40 and probably closer to 30. In other words at least 90% of the congressional races are pre-determined, in large part because of the way the politicians draw the lines. The “representatives” choose the voters rather than the other way around.
As recently as the 1970s, there were about 100 House seats seen as competitive and that number has consistently fallen. Yes, part of that is due to the fact that Americans are increasingly ideologically clustering. But gerrymandering is a big factor, and it’s getting worse. Both parties are in on the racket.
