As we’ve mentioned often on these pages, Canada’s economy is sadly moribund with per capita income below that of Mississippi.

That may explain why this weekend anti-Trump socialist Premier David Eby in British Columbia, was crushed by the BC Conservative Party. Conservatives won two-thirds of the seats in the province’s legislature.

In announcing the special election a month ago, Eby trashed Trump more than 20 times and said an election was needed to counter the “existential threat” he represented. He urged voters to “Join us saying hell no to Trump and to his politics.”

But he badly miscalculated. Polls found the economy was the number one issue with voters, followed by housing, health care, crime and government accountability. “We spoke to 802 people, nobody mentioned Trump,” said independent pollster Mario Canseco.

The winning Conservatives called for an income-tax cut, consumer choice in auto insurance, more energy production and more protections for property rights. Party leader Lorne Doerksen sounded a lot like Trump on Election Night:

“I believe in the people who build, dig and grow…..We’ll double natural gas production by 2032. We’ll have permits in months rather than years…To the business owner that is thinking about taking what they have built somewhere else, I am begging you to stay because there are incredible things coming. Grow it here, we will make it worth your while.”
