Another history lesson:

Did you know that when the income tax was adopted in 1913 the highest rate was… 7%.  Originally it was going to be 1% and a “temporary tax.”

Opponents of the income tax in the Congress raised an amendment that the rate should never be allowed to rise above 7%.

The supporters of the income tax voted down that amendment with the solemn promise that the income tax would NEVER be raised to the unthinkable level of 10%, so the amendment was unnecessary.

The tax was also supposed to apply to only the richest 4% of Americans. Six years later during World War I, the income tax rose to 77% to support the war mobilization and nearly everyone paid it.

So much for 10% being unthinkable!

In 1919 the same progressives ratified a Prohibition Amendment banning alcohol. By 1933 that policy was a complete failure and it was repealed.

Why oh why didn’t Congress also repeal the failed income tax experiment?
