Everyone knows about California’s high-speed rail boondoggle that UP senior fellow Wendell Cox exposed and largely killed. The transit lobby still hasn’t given up, even though the train’s latest cost estimate is now $135 billion – or quadruple the original cost estimate to link San Francisco to LA by rail.
Here’s California’s latest transit nightmare. The 2.25-mile Automated People Mover at LAX was supposed to provide a rail connection right to airport terminals.
The project was promised to be ready in time for FIFA World Cup Soccer games this coming June and the Olympics in 2028. But the People Mover is now almost a billion dollars over budget and three years late – already.
One reason for the delays is that the People Mover was partly designed by climate change fanatics. Lawmakers insisted on “a high standard for environmentally sustainable transportation” that included zero-carbon emissions electric operation, cars that are 98% recyclable, and solar panels on the roofs. Its regenerative braking features provide less stopping power in emergencies and lead to greater corrosion.
Maybe the urban planners should surrender and admit that trendy futuristic transit doesn’t work in Southern California where cars are like exoskeletons and driving on congested roads is regarded as a human right.
