Antarctica’s Ice Sheet Is Growing and It’s No Surprise You Haven’t Read About It

A new peer-reviewed scientific study shows that Antarctica’s massive ice sheet is growing, not shrinking. Four key glacier basins have shown significant growth due to increased snowfall.

Science China Earth Sciences reports that the Antarctic Ice Sheet had a record-breaking mass gain between 2021 and 2023 — a historic turnaround.

That growth was enough to (for now) offset global sea level rises.

The Antarctic Ice Sheet holds more than half of the world’s fresh water, so the increase is welcome. Fox News reports scientists say, “it’s a reminder of how dynamic and sensitive polar regions are to climate shifts. If similar conditions persist, they could reshape near-term sea level predictions.”

It’s important to realize that as with COVID, the models used to predict Antarctic and other ice flows aren’t the full story. Recall that models recently predicted the world was going to run out of polar bears? It turns out that their population is now increasing.
