For all the media griping on Trump’s economy consider this: there’s never in the last half-century been a week when fewer Americans lost their job than last week. You have to go back before Francis Ford Coppola released the Godfather – Part ONE.

A record low number of Americans filed for unemployment insurance last week. That’s especially amazing given the labor force is about twice as large today than in 1970. Only one of 1,000 workers were laid off last week!

In truth, this is a good news – bad news story. The good news is jobs are plentiful for those who want to work. As James Freeman reports in the WSJ:

It could be a tough day on the left wing of American politics. U.S. companies are churning out profits and laying off almost no one. Constant warnings about artificial intelligence destroying jobs are coinciding with the lowest weekly job destruction number recorded in nearly six decades.

The bad news.  Where are the workers to fill the job openings?

As we’ve reported previously, the labor force participation rate for prime-age males is still historically low at 89%. Looks like we’re going to need those robots quickly.

Is there any reason why every American who is of working-age, able-bodied and collecting a government benefit shouldn’t be required to work? Why are Democrats against that?
