Our point is that one of the many mythologies about data centers is that they will use up the nation’s clean water supply.
The Chinese propagandists are no doubt circulating this lie. This UP chart compares the water usage in the U.S. for different activities. Right now pools and golf courses use far more water than AI. Even villainous watermelons use somewhat more than datacenters.

The latest UN report breathlessly warns that data centers could scale up their resource consumption 25x in coming decades. We’re skeptical. But even if it happened, they would still use less water in the US than golf courses.
