Last year, an astonishing one out of eight Americans were recipients in the Food Stamp program. An anti-fraud crackdown has reduced that number and at the same time revealed that 43 states and Washington D.C. bypass and/or don’t properly enforce federal eligibility limits on income, assets or both.
Researchers at the Foundation for Government Accountability obtained data from one state and found that loophole has allowed 14,000 people to cruise to their local grocery store in Maseratis, Lamborghinis, Porsches and other eye-popping luxury cars to purchase food at taxpayer expense.
Among the well-heeled food stamp scammers in just the one state that’s been probed are:
- a university professor who drives a 2020 Rolls-Royce valued at $346,000
- a “celebrity barber” who owns a 2018 Lamborghini Spyder valued at $220,000.
- a professional football player who has a 2022 BMW valued at $158,000 parked in his garage.

It takes a lot of guts to pay for your groceries with other people’s money as you drive in and out of the parking lot in a Lamborghini.

Rollins asked states to provide comprehensive data on food stamp recipients, including their immigration status. Only 29 states complied. The remaining states – all Blue, including California and New York – went to court to avoid complying.
