GOP Gained up to Eight House Seats in Redistricting Wars

We hate gerrymandering and redrawing congressional district lines due to corrupt mid-decade redistricting scams.

But both parties are guilty, and this time around Republicans did it a lot better in the red states than the Democrats did in the blue states.

According to the left-wing group Democracy Project, Republicans potentially gained up to 14 seats – five in Texas, four in Florida and one each in Missouri, North Carolina, Tennessee, Louisiana and Alabama. On the other side, Democrats could gain up to six seats – five in California and one in Utah.

The race for House control could tighten, but Democrats are still more than two to one favorites to win a majority in November, according to betting markets.

Democrats keep pulling out the race card and fret that Republicans are trying to wipe out black Democratic incumbents who have been protected from political competition only through racial gerrymandering.

But their complaints are really crocodile tears. Take Tennessee. Steve Cohen, a white Democrat, has represented Memphis for the last 20 years even though his district is 62% African-American. He is now retiring, but his district now leans Republican and his likely successor is Charlotte Bergmann, a former FedEx manager and GOP activist who happens to be black.

It’s more than a little hypocritical to make the argument that a new congressional map that’s likely to have a black Republican replace a white Democrat is racist.
