In L.A. Schools It’s Pay For Non-Performance

The Los Angeles Unified School District (the nation’s second-largest, with a $20 billion budget) just folded to the demands of the teacher union to avert a strike. The union won a 12% two-year raise, roughly twice the rate of inflation.

Maria Nichols, president of the Associated School Administrators of Los Angeles, was all aglow, proclaiming victory and said each union fought because “we care about our kids.” Sure they do.

The Los Angeles schools are a disgrace.

A third of students in LA Unified drop out without graduating from high school.  Over 72% of students fail math tests, and over 58% fail English.

Over the last dozen years, LA Unified has seen the number of staffers and their budgets soar while the number of students has plummeted.

We’re all for paying great teachers a lot more money. But this contract rewards lousy teachers with pay raises.

Let’s be honest: the teacher unions are the enemies of the kids. Whenever you hear a teacher union leader claim they are fighting “for the kids,” guard your wallet.
