Regular HOTLINE readers know that we railed against the Biden Administration’s inexplicable antitrust veto of a merger between the faltering Spirit and JetBlue airlines. The new carrier would have had a market share of just 9%.
We predicted that as a result of this moronic Biden veto of the merger, Spirit would end up in bankruptcy. We were right.
Now the Trump administration is considering a bailout, per the WSJ:
Under the agreement being discussed, the U.S. government would loan the embattled discount carrier as much as $500 million, receiving in return warrants to take a potential significant stake in Spirit, people familiar with the matter said. The investment could help keep Spirit afloat as it seeks to emerge from its second recent bankruptcy filing.

Ted Cruz has this exactly right. It’s a disgrace that the federal government put Spirit in this situation, but that’s hardly justification for a half a billion taxpayer dollar corporate-welfare package. Our view is that with the government as a business partner, Spirit will never make a profit. Think Amtrak and the Postal Service in the skies and on the runways.
If the government does bail out Spirit, we suggest all of the members of Congress and White House should be sentenced to doing all their future air travel on Spirit.
