Let There Be Light

Trump says he wants to end Daylight Saving Time:

We believe he has it exactly wrong: we should make yearlong daylight savings time the default setting and let states decide if they want to opt-out.

Allison Schrager argues in Bloomberg:

America actually did adopt permanent DST during the energy crisis of 1974 — and it was unpopular in part because people didn’t like sending their kids to school in the dark. The experiment, which was supposed to last two years, was canceled after 10 months.

Things have changed a lot since then. There has been a significant migration to the South in the last half century, meaning there are fewer people who would have to deal with the dark mornings and more businesses that would benefit from lighter evenings.

Under current law, states have a choice of operating on year-round standard time or part-time daylight saving time. Why not offer them the third choice of year-round daylight time so it doesn’t get dark at 5 o’clock?
