Several school districts in Virginia are defying Governor Glenn Youngkin’s executive order empowering parents to have their kids opt out of mandatory school masking requirements. A number of principals of government schools illegally quarantined kids who showed up without masks on Monday. It’s headed to a high-stakes constitutional showdown as to whether the local school districts can defy the governor’s order.
With either outcome about half the parents aren’t going to be happy.
The obvious resolution to these conflicts is to take judges, politicians and school boards out of the equation by allowing parents to choose the schools they want their kids to attend. Many parents want their kids in schools that require masks. Many others are adamantly opposed to forcing eight-year-olds to wear masks for six or eight hours a day. With school choice, every parent goes away happy.
