Meet New York’s Anti-Business Dynamic Duo

As if New York businesses don’t have enough to contend with as Zohran Mamdani prepares to take over as Mayor, now he’s appointed a sidekick business harasser in Lina Khan.

Khan was the Biden-era chair of the Federal Trade Commission, who tried to bring antitrust lawsuits against any business that dared to make a profit. That’s only a slight exaggeration.

Her official role isn’t defined yet, but it looks like she will be Mamdani’s regulator in chief. Khan is already reportedly scouring city and state laws for legal authority to impose Mamdani’s radical agenda.

She’s unearthed a 56-year-old New York City law that prohibits any business practice deemed “unconscionable” – what Semafor calls “a designation expansive enough to delight any regulator.” It’s only been used once, but Khan sees it as a way to do everything from cutting the price of beer at Yankee Stadium to curbing algorithmic price setting.

She’s also compiling “a full accounting” of all the powers that Mamdani “can ultimately deploy” in office to bring businesses to heel. But how long before they skip town?
