As the nation celebrates its 250th anniversary, more and more evidence piles up that Democrats have separated from the rest of the country on a broad range of questions including patriotism, civic pride, and America’s standing in the world.
A new poll of 1,000 adults sponsored by North Carolina’s Elon University found that a majority of Democratic respondents, 55%, said they would rather live outside the United States than remain here.
Put us in the “America, Love it Or Leave it” camp. The most popular countries by far named by those wanting to take the “AmerExit” ramp were Canada and the United Kingdom. Both are far more socialist in economics and far more restrictive of free speech because they lack a First Amendment. We’re surprised more of these disgruntled socialists don’t want to give that workers’ paradise, Cuba, a try.
By contrast, only 10% of Republicans said they would prefer to live abroad.
The poll responses speak to how the country is being increasingly polarized along partisan lines. Among Republicans, 68% said they felt proud about the country, with another 19% said they were grateful. But among Democrats, only 18% felt proud and 17% grateful. A total of 42% – almost half the sample – felt conflicted, frustrated, or disappointed.
Something as basic as the American Dream is now a major point of contention: 75% of Republicans agreed it remains attainable for anyone willing to work hard, regardless of their circumstances. Only 25% of Democrats agree with that statement.
