We can’t think of a bigger disappointment on the school choice issue anywhere than Josh Shapiro, because he promised he would be one of the best Democrats on school choice, and he quickly established himself as unreliable at best. In 2023, Shapiro vetoed the $100 million lifeline program that would have given scholarships to poor kids in failing schools that he had expressly supported.

Now he’s proposing a budget that would slash $500 million from charter schools and gut education tax credits.

This could put 30,000 kids at risk of losing their scholarships. Already there are about 70,000 kids who want to go to a private school but the scholarship money isn’t available because of program caps. Once again, a prominent Democrat places the unions ahead of the kids.
