Privatize the TSA

This Travel & Leisure magazine headline highlighting massive waiting lines three hours long to get through airport security caught our eye:

This raises an obvious question: Why is a politicized federal bureaucracy running airport security?

The TSA was created after the 9/11 attacks in 2001, and certainly the private security firms that airlines hired at the time had to be fixed.

But there was no need to create a massive unionized workforce of 65,000 people.

TSA chief Kip Hawley slams the agency as “hopelessly bureaucratic.”

How sad that our airports are more socialized than those in Europe, where the majority of commercial airports use private services for security screening. Even the Israelis – who are the most fanatical about airport security – use elite contractors to implement many of their security measures, especially when El Al is involved.

Today, 22 airports in the United States use private contractors to conduct security screening rather than TSA agents. Among them is San Francisco International Airport, often ranked as one of the best in America.

It’s time to privatize the TSA.
