“The United States is in the throes of the largest tax revolt in a generation, and the revolutionaries are winning,” declares the liberal Atlantic magazine.

They’re right and they don’t want another California-style Proposition 13 antitax revolt to sweep the nation.

Florida, North Carolina, and Oklahoma voters will decide whether to limit property taxes or broaden exemptions. Some two dozen states from Alabama to Wyoming have already chopped their property taxes.

The revolt is driven by high inflation shrinking the dollar’s purchasing power as well as rising home values and tax bills that are soaring out of sight.

The most ambitious anti-tax plan is Florida’s Amendment 3, which would raise the exemption on owner-occupied homes from $50,000 to $250,000.

The Left is warning of doom if property taxes are lowered. Florida Democratic State Senator Tina Polsky says that if Amendment 3 passes in Florida, cities and counties “wouldn’t have enough money to keep going, even to pay their elected officials.”

Wrong. Families tighten their belts all the time when income fluctuates. As with Proposition 13, this new property tax revolt is not just about saving homeowners money. It’s sending a signal to state and local governments that they too have to live within their means.
