More bad news from the left coast: The University of California, once the crown jewel of America’s public universities, is in turmoil. The problem began in 2020 when under pressure from “diversity” advocates, the UC regents decided to drop the use of SAT or ACT scores for undergraduate admissions.

Now some 2,200 UC faculty members – hardly a group of raging conservatives – have signed open letters arguing that students are arriving with weak math and reasoning skills, sometimes at junior-high school levels. More and more freshmen take remedial classes.

Instead of using test scores as part of admissions, the current system leans heavily on grades, activities, and four very short “Personal Insight Questions.”

The final decision on whether the UC campuses will return to common sense will be made by the regents. Governor Gavin Newsom, who appoints 18 of the 26 board members, has not taken a position. Dumbing down the student body is no way to achieve academic excellence.
