We always flinch when we hear the left blabber about “settled science” on the causes and consequences of climate change, Covid, or other fears.

History teaches us clearly on how fallible settled science can be. Here’s one of the first and most famous incidents in history when the well-established “settled science” was proven wrong.

From “100 Great Lives:”

The whole conflict between Galileo and the Church arose out of Galileo’s defense and teaching of the heliocentric theory, which sets out that the sun is fixed and the earth in motion…

He raised a storm of protest. The defenders of the Ptolemaic system declared that his theory was contrary to Holy Scripture…

In 1615, Pope Paul V conveyed a semiofficial warning to Galileo. In the following year the theologians of the Holy Office decided that the theory that the sun is immovable in the centre of the world and that the earth has a diurnal motion about it was heretical, and Galileo was admonished not to “hold, teach, or defend” the forbidden theory…

And then in 1632 he published his great work… clearly written in defiance of the ban of 1616…

Galileo was summoned to appear before the Inquisition in Rome… He was found guilty and sentenced to imprisonment…

Cardinal Bellarmine, who took a prominent part in the whole affair, wrote afterward: “I say that if real proof be found that the sun is fixed and does not revolve round the earth, and the earth around the sun, then it will be necessary, very carefully, to proceed to the explanation of the passages of Scripture which appear to the contrary…”

At least a pope eventually admitted the Church’s mistake. It was Pope John Paul II, in 1992, a mere 352 years after the Church found Galileo guilty.

He dared challenge “The Science”
