There Really IS Something the Matter With Kansas

ACE Scholarships, one of the country’s leading scholarship-granting organizations have awarded almost $400 million to date. These scholarships help low income families send their kids to private schools. Starting next year, Trump’s Federal Tax Credit Scholarship will allow donors to organizations like ACE to get a $1700 per year tax credit to offset their donations. Programs like this are pro-education by providing families the best school options for their kids.

Who could be against any of this? (Well, other than the toxic teacher unions.)

Jeanne Allen of Center for Education Reform has graded states on how they are doing in encouraging programs like this.

The chart below shows some of the best and worst. Kudos to Montana, Arkansas, Texas and Utah.

What’s disturbing is that Kansas and Mississippi are among the worst states, with very limited state-level school choice programs.

Mississippi is a particular disappointment because the governor made a big pitch for school choice expansion this year, but suburban Republicans led the opposition.

One other outrage is that there are still 21 states that will not allow scholarships funded by the Trump tax credits to benefit the poorest kids in their states. How is that “progressive?”

At least in Kansas the state legislature joined the federal program by overriding the governor’s veto.
