Virginia was the very first state to opt into Trump’s new federal tax credit scholarship program for 2027 when Governor Glenn Youngkin was running the state.
But now Governor Abigail Spanberger is hinting she may pull Virginia out of the program thanks to pressure from the teachers unions.
The unions are telling her to pull the plug by refusing to submit the required list of Scholarship Granting Organization, which she is required to do by federal law.
This week Spanberger sounded like a waffler:
“I think the current status of where we are remains in question,” she told reporters at Glen Lea Elementary School in Henrico. “We’re continuing to evaluate the program and where Virginia is and what our options are moving forward.” Her stated priority is “the most comprehensive and direct support of public schools across Virginia as we can provide.”
If she pulls Virginia out of the program, tens of thousands of kids could lose scholarship money that costs the state NOTHING!
We’re not sure whether this gambit would work as a legal matter. But it does show is that Spanberger, who just a year ago was regarded as a rising Democratic star ready to play on the national stage, has the spine of a jelly fish.
She should listen to New York Democratic Governor Kathy Hochul, who recently explained: “this program has the potential to bring millions of additional dollars to New York students and families without taking a single dollar from public schools or our state or local budgets.”
