The passage of California’s famous Proposition 13 (the sweeping property tax cut in 1978 approved by almost two-thirds of voters) jet-fueled the GoldenState economy for a quarter century of growth. It also was the precursor to the Reagan Revolution two years later.
Now we are seeing in the states what CNN is calling the “biggest property tax revolt in 50 years.”
Americans are again being taxed out of their homes as the burden of state/local property tax assessments and rate hikes escalate. Realtor.com counts at least 10 states that are “moving away from reforming and instead aim to kill the property tax.” Florida is well on the way to doing just that under Gov Ron DeSantis.
The economist spearheading the fight is our UP co-founder Dr. Arthur Laffer. Here’s the list of 10 states with major property tax elimination or relief in 2026:
Florida
Texas
Ohio
Michigan
North Dakota
Georgia
Indiana
Oklahoma
South Dakota
One example of out control property taxes is Kansas. This chart from the Kansas Policy Institute shows property taxes rising two to three times faster than population and inflation.

We expect more states to join the revolt as a way to make homes more affordable.
