You may have heard the news that America has recently annexed some-one million square kilometers of resource-rich off-shore land and sea in the Arctic region. It is called the “Extended Continental Shelf” and the land area is roughly half the size of Alaska or two Californias! It’s the largest U.S. land acquisition (albeit a seashelf underwater) since the Alaska Purchase.
Why does it matter? Because geologists believe this underwater treasure chest has abundant energy and critical mineral resources.
The area includes the Arctic, the Bering Sea, the Mariana Islands and even regions down in the Gulf of Mexico. As Earth.com put it, “It’s like America just bought a new basement.”
This sounds to us like a very smart Trump strategy to relieve the U.S. of our dependency on Russia and China for critical and precious minerals. We’re pretty sure no one will refer to this as “Trump’s Folly.”
