New scientific health studies find that diet sodas are not bad for your health – in fact are no worse than drinking water. A controlled trial of diet soda versus water found they were equivalent. The diet soda drinkers even lost a little more weight, although it wasn’t statistically significant:
After the final 52-week unassisted phase of the 104-week behavioural weight-management programme, water and [diet] beverages showed equivalence regarding weight change from baseline. Our findings suggest people can lose weight and maintain it for 2 years, when drinking either NNS beverages or water and taking part in weight-management programmes.
Health “experts” like Mike Bloomberg and his allies are pushing soda taxes again, even though Americans have already started to switch to zero and low calorie beverages according to product sales data.
Yes, America has an obesity problem, but soda pop isn’t the culprit. Adult obesity rose 37% from 2000 to 2024, while full-calorie soda sales dropped by 23%. Obesity rates have since declined due to GLP-1s. Soda just isn’t a factor.
So why do the pols want to implement soda taxes even on non-sugar drinks – as is the case in Philadelphia? Because it isn’t about lower calories, it’s about raising money for obese government.
