If you’ve been to LAX Airport lately, you will see its glitzy new $3 billion transit system that no one is riding. The Orange County Register has concluded: “In the race to be the best non-functional transit system in California, the LAX Airport Automated People Mover has taken a narrow lead over the California High-Speed Rail.”

LAX’s Skylink system is just 2.25 miles long, and was planned to reduce airport traffic congestion. So far, it’s only reduced its own bond rating, which has just been lowered to “Rating Watch Negative.” The system was supposed to cost no more than $2 billion and open in early 2023. Its price tag has soared by 50% and is still rising. Fees to pay for it will spike prices of everything at the airport from meals to Uber rides. There’s a chance it may not even be ready for the 2028 Olympic Games.

But like the obsessed British Colonel Nicholson in the movie “The Bridge on the River Kwai,” California transit officials insist every rail project be completed no matter what the cost or “woke” rules.

In the case of the contract to build Skylink, the stipulations included that its maintenance shop generate nearly half its power from solar energy and that its workers should include people “transitioning out of gang involvement.”

California can’t build enough houses. It can’t build needed refineries. It can’t build enough water storage facilities. But it is determined to build rail lines to nowhere that do virtually nothing to reduce traffic congestion.
