You’ve got to love the latest move by California Gov. Gavin Newsom who is spending $105,000 on ads in faraway Florida with claims that “Freedom is under attack in your state.”
Newsom accuses Florida’s Gov. Ron DeSantis of banning books, voter suppression, and abortion crackdowns. “Don’t let them take your freedom.”
“We’re as different,” Newsom told reporters in explaining the ad, “as daylight and darkness.” Never mind that Californians are flocking to red states like Florida week after week after week. Never mind that California leads the nation in homelessness, high taxes, and business losses. When’s the last time you heard about a business moving TO California?
We have no objection to Gavin Newsom promoting his state in Florida. GOP governors advertise their states in California all the time. Competition between the states is a very healthy thing. We like federalism.
What we find comical is the part about Florida being in “darkness.” Actually, Governor, it is California that can’t keep the lights on because of rolling brownouts, thanks to your radical green energy policies.

Actor Rob Schneider also had a brilliant response to the California fairy tale:
Since he was elected in 2018, Newsom has presided over a state with the highest poverty rate in the nation, a soaring crime rate, fleeing businesses, falling population, and utility brownouts. California’s budget per capita is 50 percent larger than Florida’s, but the quality of its services is clearly worse.
PowerLineBlog.com relishes the contrast between the competing visions of Newsom and DeSantis: “So let’s make the 2024 presidential election a referendum on blue state vs. red state policies. We know how that election would turn out. All we have to do is look at how Americans are already voting with their feet.”
