Yale Tries To Save Itself

Last week, the overseers at Yale issued a comprehensive report on declining trust in higher education. The report notes:

Just a decade ago, 57 percent of Americans expressed “a great deal” or “quite a lot” of confidence in higher education. By 2024, that number had dropped to a historic low of 36 percent. While trust improved slightly in 2025, seventy percent of Americans still say that higher education is heading in the wrong direction.

The report acknowledges what conservatives have been saying for decades: campuses are hostile environments for anyone who dares to dissent from liberal orthodoxy.

Consider this factoid:

Estimates suggest that registered Democrats outnumber registered Republicans among faculty nationwide by a margin of about 10 to 1. At Yale, according to a 2025 estimate by the Buckley Institute, registered Democrats outnumber Republicans 36 to 1 across the Faculty of Arts Sciences, the Law School, and the School of Management.

The report recommends:

Starting in 2026-27, each department and school should engage in a self-study examining the breadth of its intellectual and methodological commitments; the range of scholarly approaches represented on its faculty; the diversity of perspectives in its curriculum; and the openness of its hiring and admissions practices to dissenting or underrepresented traditions.

We won’t hold our breath waiting for these reforms.

So sad that free markets, free speech, and intellectual diversity are “underrepresented” positions at Yale.
