How predictable was this?
Spirit Airlines filed for bankruptcy in 2024 with $2.5 billion in losses since 2020. Now it has ceased operations and filed for liquidation with about $9 billion in total debt. The assets will be sold at fire sale prices, around 17,000 airline jobs will be lost, and shareholders get shafted.
We warned this was the likely outcome if the Biden Administration, led by then-Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg and the antitrust cops, blocked the Spirit-Jetblue merger.
Another unsung villain in this tragedy is that renowned warrior for the working class, Massachusetts Senator Elizabeth Warren, who pressured a no on the merger and celebrated it being blocked:
Well, congratulations, Senator. You won and sure enough. Now we have LESS competition, higher fares and fewer jobs.
If anything good can come out of this travesty, it is that maybe more people will understand that our antitrust laws are hopelessly outdated and need to be reformed or repealed.
