1) Chamber of Horrors
Shortly after House Democrats gave “thumbs up” to Bernie Sanders’ $3.5 trillion budget blueprint, U.S. Chamber of Commerce CEO Suzanne Clark fired off a statement that the business lobby “will do everything we can to prevent this tax-raising, job-killing reconciliation bill from becoming law.”
The Chamber’s bizarre political giving in 2020 sowed the seeds of this defeat. The measure may never have passed without the Chamber’s financial support of 23 House Democrat candidates running in hotly contested races. It turns out, 18 of them won.
Didn’t the Chamber brain trust know that helping Nancy Pelosi – the most anti-business Speaker in American history – retain her vice grip on the House could lead to the catastrophic bill they now sanctimoniously say they will try to stop?
Those 18 Chamber-backed House Democrats provided the crucial “aye” votes that pushed the bill over the goal line. If that campaign money had instead gone to the pro-biz Republicans, the country and the Chamber businesses wouldn’t be in this awful predicament.
