The bureaucratic incompetence and infuriating lack of compassion at the FDA has been a common theme of the HOTLINE. This video from a recent Senate oversight hearing of doctors and patients protesting the FDA decision to reject a drug for Ataxia, a rare but crippling and fatal neurological disorder, exposes the heartbreaking cruelty of these government regulators. If you have five to 10 minutes to watch, you will be horrified to hear the story.
Hundreds of sufferers from the disease have testified that it works. It has passed critical trials. There are NO harmful side effects. The FDA wants more tests as victims wind up in wheelchairs and die in crippling pain.
These stories of similar promising drugs denied by the FDA to diseased patients are too many to recount, but the WSJ editorial page has done a great job at uncovering one by one these mounting scandals.
President Trump has promised to fix the bureaucratic morass at the FDA and to allow Americans the right to try promising treatments. Instead, the agency stonewalls. It has proven to be unfixable. Allowing patients with crippling diseases the right to decide which drugs they want to use (“my body, my choice”) should be a human right. Americans’ health would be vastly improved without the FDA.
