Slavery ended over 160 years ago in America and California was NOT a slave state. But it is a woke/virtue signaling state that hates business.

The legislature just passed and sent to Governor Newsom’s desk the Truth In Disclosure Act. It requires major corporations doing business in California to review their historical records and submit sworn affidavits disclosing any ties they ever had to slavery, especially “any transactions related to wealth gained during chattel slavery.” The information would then be compiled and posed in a public digital archive.

No doubt such a portal would become a magnet for activists and trial lawyers trying to shake down companies for donations or reparations to “social justice” causes.

The author of the bill, Assemblyman Issac Bryan, styles himself as one of the leading scholars behind the “defund the police” movement. In 2020, Bryan was behind the passage of a Los Angeles County law that sought to divert at least 10% of the county’s general funds “to address the disproportionate impact of racial injustice through community investment and alternatives to incarceration.” The courts declared the law unconstitutional.

Of course, if this bill became law, it would be a stepping stone to firms doing businesses in California to pay reparations. The state has already created a permanent government Bureau for Descendants of American Slavery to agitate for further action.

Instead of virtue signaling, why don’t the Democrats who rule Sacramento do something that really WILL do something to benefit minorities. How about school choice for any child that is a long-ago descendant of slaves? How about school choice for any minority child?

But they would never do that because the one group that the Cal pols care more about than minorities is teachers unions.
