California Pays the Highest Gas Taxes for the Worst Roads

Speaking of the left coast, people are fleeing the big blue states not just because of the oppressive taxes, but because incompetent state government.  The latest Reason Foundation rankings of state highway system performance finds only vast, rural Alaska has a worse performing road system than California, Washington State, and New York.

The report finds that California ranks:

  • 47th in Rural Interstate Pavement Condition
  • 48th in Urban Interstate Pavement Condition
  • 39th in Rural Arterial Pavement Condition
  • 50th in Urban Arterial Pavement Condition

How does California manage to have the worst roads in the continental US with the highest gas tax?

At the other end of the spectrum are the top 10:

A report by Laffer Associates has found that it costs 50% more to build a mile of road in California than in Texas, because of regulations. Good roads are one of the government services most people are willing to pay for. But in many states, taxpayers are now paying a fortune for terrible results.
