California Teachers Union: How Dare Kids Learn Anything While We’re On Strike

We got a big response yesterday when we reported that the teachers union in San Francisco was holding 50,000 students hostage with a strike that even former Speaker Nancy Pelosi asked them to delay.

Things are even worse than we thought. In response to the strike, the SF school district offered homework packets which gave home-bound students “five days of independent study work and practice in both English Language Arts and in Math.”

This prompted many striking teachers to contact parents and tell their kids not to touch the dangerous lesson plans.

“If many families participate in independent study, it reduces pressure on the district and can prolong the strike,” read a screenshot shared on social media. “If you are able, we ask that you do not participate in the independent study provided by the district.”

Other backers of the strike compared parents letting their kids do homework to “crossing a picket line” or “the same as using scabs.”

Tech worker Nadim Hossain, who has a child in elementary school, was dumbfounded by the request:

Average salaries for a striking San Francisco school teacher is about $100,000 a year, significantly higher than the national average of $72,000. The school district currently has a budget deficit of over $100 million.
