Clueless In New York

Here’s another sign of the disgraceful dumbing down of America through lax education standards.

New York’s Board of Regents voted Monday to phase out the Regents exam as a graduation requirement.

For decades, students have had to pass exams in math, English, science, and global studies to earn a high school diploma. Then the Regents watered the tests down to make them more “relevant.”

The motivation is clear. The kids can’t pass the test anymore.

Fewer than 6 in 10 New York seniors currently pass the exams, and Algebra II proficiency among New York City students has dropped from 69% in 2019 before COVID to just 44% last year.

Politico pointed out the irony of the decision to ditch the Regents requirement: “The news comes as the state grapples with abysmal performance on this year’s reading exams  –  despite New York spending more per pupil than any other state in the country.”

Dumbing down the tests and lowering standards is no way to make America smarter.
