Congress has sensibly added provisions to the latest highway bill that would prohibit states from banning or regulating autonomous trucks if they are demonstrated to meet safety standards.
This will mean cheaper everything because of much mower costs for longhaul transportation. It will also mean far fewer fatalities, accidents and traffic delays – although it could eventually displace hundreds of thousands of truck drivers. That displacement is a real political challenge, but an economic and productivity boom. We commend Congress for embracing rather than fighting the future on technology and human welfare.
