British scientist Matt Ridley says we are closer than ever to discovering the origins of COVID-19. A leak from the Wuhan laboratory is the most likely origin, especially after a long search for an animal host has failed completely.

Ridley, the author of Viral: The Search for The Origin of COVID-19, says “we live in an era where there is so much information being stored that it will eventually come out.”
Just this week, e-mails were released showing Western scientists communicating on the virus’ organ in early 2020. They show Sir Jeremy Farrar, head of Britain’s Wellcome Trust, in an exchange with Francis Collins, the now retired director of the National Institutes of Health, and his deputy, Anthony Fauci.
Republicans staffers on the House Oversight Committee report documents they reviewed show that Fauci and Sir Patrick Vallance, Britain’s Chief Scientific Adviser, were briefed by several virologists who thought the new virus had been manipulated in the laboratory.
The scientists involved all not only kept quiet but actively tried to trash the reputation of anyone who held that view. In the words of Dr. Collins, the goal of an article they promoted dismissing the lab leak theory was to “settle” the matter and “put down this very destructive conspiracy” in case the news threatened “international harmony”.
Further articles in such journals Lancet and Nature Medicine dismissing the lab leak theory soon appeared. They were written by some of the same virologists who had leaned towards the theory the virus originated in a lab. The Lancetarticle set out to “strongly condemn conspiracy theories suggesting that Covid-19 does not have a natural origin”.
Ridley says “at the time, I trusted senior virologists who told me the lab leak could be dismissed. Frankly, I was duped.” So was much of the rest of the world, with consequences for the credibility of “the science” we are expected to follow that may take years or longer to repair.
