How Data Centers Resurrected This Struggling Town

We are bombarded with condemnations of data centers on the left and right. Two-thirds of voters have a negative view of these engines of our economic future.

So in case you missed it, bravo to CNN on this story of the rebirth of Quincy, a small rural town in rural Washington.

Here were some of the findings of the Economic Transformation that has taken place in Quincy:

  • Lower Poverty: The poverty rate in Quincy fell from 29.4% in 2012 down to 6.2% by 2024.
  • New Public Works: Tax revenue from tech companies like Microsoft funded a new high school, hospital, library, police and fire stations, and upgraded water and sewer systems.
  • Lower Tax Rates: Property tax levy rates for residents actually decreased because the high-value data centers carry a massive share of the local tax burden.

The lesson from Quincy should be obvious to the tech industry: only build data centers in communities that want them. There are hundreds of Quincy, Washingtons across America that want jobs and development.
