Few companies have done more to reduce consumer prices and increase choices than Amazon. But no good deed goes unpunished in Democrat strongholds, and so New York City pols have a history of hating Amazon. Remember it was in 2019 when newly-elected Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio Cortez teamed up with a socialist activist named Zohran Mamdani to successfully oppose Amazon’s huge planned “HQ2” campus in Queens. So Amazon and the jobs went to Virginia.

Somehow, that was the start of Mamdani’s rise to fame.

Now as mayor, Mamdani is pushing a Teamsters-backed law which would require Amazon to directly hire couriers employed by independent firms to deliver its packages. A study found that this law would add an extra $664 per year to the bill New Yorkers pay to get their goods.

So the most expensive city in America just got more expensive. Meanwhile, the law would endanger up to 5,000 jobs and force Amazon to move delivery operations outside the city – making deliveries both slower and more expensive.

This will only accelerate the move to have drones and robots deliver packages.
