Driverless cars are the next big thing in transportation and will save lives and money. Some 20 cities across the country have for years been testing the use of Waymo driverless vehicles. Data from 3,000 vehicles and their 170 million miles of fully autonomous driving shows the Waymo Driver had 92% fewer crashes that cause serious or fatal injuries compared to human drivers.
They are already all over the roads in Los Angeles and San Francisco.
New York City gave Waymo a serious try last year when then-Mayor Eric Adams and Governor Kathy Hochul gave a green light to testing eight Waymo cars.
But last week, new Mayor Zohran Mamdani slammed the brakes on their further use. He claimed that the jobs of 180,000 city taxi drivers were at risk and he was committed to “worker rights.”

His decision makes transportation in New York City (especially for the poor) more expensive, less safe, and more congested. Mamdani’s decision was a sop to the Transport Workers Union.
We worry that liberals across the country will start waging war on progress and convenience. Bring back the horse and buggy.
