The Social Security Administration came clean yesterday and admitted what anyone paying half attention already knows: Social Security is running out of money to pay promised benefits.
Remember Al Gore’s lock box? Turns out there isn’t one! Suckers!
The victims here of the Social Security Ponzi Scheme – and that’s exactly what it is – are those of you who are Millennials or Gen Z’ers.
The average Millennial will get less than 50 cents back on each dollar of tax paid in, when accounting for the lost rate of return on that money over time. Younger workers will be lucky to get 33 cents back. That’s because Washington’s solution (and too many Republicans are in on this steal) is to raise the payroll taxes you pay in and in exchange you get an even tinier benefit. Such a deal!
There’s only one way out of the crisis that benefits young people and future generations. Immediately allow every worker under 40 to set aside 12% of their paycheck in an index fund so they earn a real rate of return on their money. Government can’t take it away because you own the account.
It’s so obvious and advantageous that Congress will probably never do it – unless young people take to the streets and demand a fair deal for their generation.
The average worker would get well more than $1 million in wealth in today’s dollars with a personal account system.
