Speaking of business-friendly states, Texas added approximately 1.5 million net domestic migrants from other states and DC between 2012 and 2023, based on IRS data, as reported by the Unleash Prosperity Vote with Your Feet site. This is nearly equal to the population of the city of Philadelphia. Only one state, Florida, added more net domestic migrants.
This net domestic migration translates into a gain in household income of $5.5 billion during the last reported year and $62.8 billion over the period of 2012 to 2023.
More recent net domestic migration data from the Census Bureau indicates that Texas has overtaken Florida as a destination in 2024 and 2025.
This appears to be a prelude to Texas becoming the most populated state in the union. According to projections by the well-respected University of Virginia Weldon Cooper Center for Public Service, Texas is projected to overtake California in population in the late 2040s. Between 2025 and 2050 Texas is projected to increase by nearly 13 million residents, while California would lose 1.2 million residents. Even the California State Department of Finance is projecting little or no growth for California.
While Americans are voting with their feet in large numbers to move to Texas, the Texas economy is also expanding. The new Dallas Stock Exchange is in the process of opening. In addition, the New York Stock Exchange is opening NYSE Texas.
Finally, with its resource friendly energy policies, the continuing growth of Texas facilitates substantial economic growth inside and outside the state.
