The runaway high-speed train in California won’t go away, no matter how much money it’s projected to lose.

Former California High Speed Rail Peer Review Group Chair Louis S. Thompson has just told to the state legislature that the choo-choo projected to cost $33 billion in 2008, will now cost $231 billion – an EIGHT X cost overrun!

Have the cheerleaders for the train simply been lying through their teeth on the cost estimates for the past 18 years?

The crazy cost estimates are even worse now that the project has been cut back significantly. It probably won’t start in San Francisco, or make it all the way to Los Angeles, as the voters were originally promised.

And you won’t believe this latest revelation reported by the San Francisco Chronicle: $1 billion of the cost overruns is attributable to the decision to bypass the gravesite of one-time Democratic hero Cesar Chavez.

It’s time for a mercy killing for this train to nowhere.
