You don’t have to be a free trade zealot to understand that one of the dumbest tariffs is on fertilizer.
Fertilizer costs have spiked since the Iran war started, because about a third of the world’s fertilizer supplies pass through the Strait of Hormuz. High costs paid by farmers mean higher prices at the grocery store.
A major driver of higher fertilizer prices is the phosphate tariffs imposed at the start of the Biden administration in 2021. That caused shortages and a price rise of about 30%.
The Trump administration is now conducting a five-year sunset review of these duties.
President Trump is reportedly under growing pressure from farmers to let them expire, and he should if he wants lower grocery bills.
