Jeff Yass, a member of UP’s Economic Policy Council and a major supporter of school choice programs around the country was honored this week at the Manhattan Institute’s Hamilton Awards Dinner. This slide he presented shows that this year, New York City will spend $37 billion on its underperforming schools.
That works out to $43,500 per pupil.
If they spent $20,000 a year (which is less than most private schools spend) they could give every kid who graduates from high school a $300,000 check.

There is some good news for New York families on school choice.
Last night Governor Kathy Hochul announced her intention to opt into the federal school choice tax credit scholarship program from Trump’s Big Beautiful Bill. She is just the second Democratic governor to do so, after Colorado’s Jared Polis.
What excuse do the other blue state governors have now?
