We know you’re probably getting tired of us banging this drum, but the tune isn’t changing.
According to the latest Census Bureau population estimates, nine out of the top ten net domestic migration metro areas between the 2020 census and 2025 are in the South. By far the largest gain was in Dallas-Fort Worth-Arlington with 270,000, followed by second-place Phoenix-Mesa-Chandler, at 195,000. This was the only metro in the top ten not in the South.
Three additional top ten metros are in Texas. Austin-Round Rock-San Marcos (153,000), ranked fourth, San Antonio-New Braunfels (140,000) ranked sixth, and Houston-Pasadena-The Woodlands (139,000) ranked seventh. Amazing. We’re old enough to remember when Austin and San Antonio were sleepy southern towns.
Four of the top ten are in Florida, with Tampa-St. Petersburg-Clearwater (159,000) ranked fourth, Jacksonville (126,000) ranked 8th, Lakeland-Winter Haven (125,000) ranked 9th, and North Port-Bradenton-Sarasota (118,000) ranked 10th.
