He’s pushing all the right medical buttons to make it happen. His nominee to serve as Surgeon General, Dr. Nicole Saphier, told the Senate Health Committee during her confirmation hearing:

Saphier: If confirmed, as surgeon general, one of my crucial messages is going to be that early detection matters, and with that is cancer screening…  Early detection and cancer screening will be a crucial message if confirmed as Surgeon General. While access and coverage are not directly under the Surgeon General’s purview, collaboration with HHS leadership and use of clinical and communication experience will help reach patients.

Recent Unleash Prosperity Now research quantified the economic opportunity in improving cancer detection and treatment in the trillions of dollars, so this is a very welcome focus for the new potential SG.

More good news: the new nominee to be Commissioner of Food and Drugs, Heidi Overton, promised to speed drug approvals, the subject of another recent paper from the Unleash Prosperity Now team.

This is a huge opportunity where even small improvements can have enormous benefits.

We suggest that once Dr. Saphier is confirmed, Trump should consider giving her the additional mandate of being his Cancer Czar.
