Massive Resistance to Dumping DEI at America’s Universities

Since President Trump returned to the White House, universities across the country seem to have retreated from their zeal to push DEI policies and programs, which have been a massive employment scheme for liberal bureaucrats.

But a recent investigation by The Economist revealed what we suspected: universities are changing the names of their DEI offices, to make them sound less woke, but the funding and staffing levels haven’t changed much.

At the University of North Carolina, for example, salaries fell just 5% and headcount was almost the same. The Economist article notes the cosmetic changes: the title of one associate dean changed from “inclusive excellence” to “well-being” and a vice-provost went from “equity and inclusion” to “student health, well-being and thriving.”

Suffice to say, there’s no way these staffers have suddenly embraced the cause of a colorblind society. The DEI diehards even acknowledge this. The president of National Association of Diversity Officers in Higher Education said: “Some people have changed the language they use publicly, but the underlying work is very similar.”

“Massive resistance” was what confronted the desegregation movement in the 1950s and 1960s. Now we see the same resistance to equal racial treatment on university campuses.

Here’s a way to stop this noncompliance. Schools that don’t end racial preferences lose their nonprofit status and start paying taxes on their billion-dollar endowments.
